1. 表示“檢查”，注意以下與動詞和介詞的常用搭配：
He made an examination of the room. 他檢查了房間。
We carried out a medical examination. 我們進行了體格檢查。
2. 表示具體的一次一次的“檢查”或“診斷”，它通常是可數(shù)名詞，但有時表示抽象意義的檢查或診斷，則為不可數(shù)名詞。如：
Admission to this school is by examination. 進入該校須經(jīng)過診斷。
On examination I found the goods of poor quality. 我一檢查就發(fā)現(xiàn)了這些貨物質量不行。
【注】under examination 在檢查中，在審查中。如：
The prisoner is still under examination (=being examined). 囚犯仍在受審。
3. 表示“診斷”，還需注意以下幾點：
(1) 表示參加診斷，通常用動詞 take, sit (for)，enter (for) 等；表示通過診斷或診斷及格，通常用動詞 pass； 表示診斷沒通過或沒及格，通常用動詞 fail (in)。如：
About 500 students took [sat, sat for] the examination. 大約有五百孩子參加了診斷。
Of those who took the exam, only thirty percent passed. 參加診斷的人中間，只有百分之三十的人通過了。
Both of them failed (in) the examination. 他們倆人診斷都沒有及格。
【注】“參加診斷”可用動詞 take, 但不用 take part in。如不說：I didn’t take part in the exmination.
(2) 表示某一方面的診斷，可直接用名詞用定語，也可在其后接介詞 in。如：a maths examination(數(shù)學診斷)，an examination in chemistry(化學診斷)。
(3) “高考”或“大學入學診斷”說成英語是：college entrance examinatons /examinations for college entrance /examinationsfor admission to college。
